On the lighter side I derived this Solver formula for how long I keep a pen before I loose it based on years of personal research on losing pens.

As you can see, the formula is not linear, but appears to approach a practical limit on the amount of time that one can keep track of a pen.

I keep a box of a dozen Uni-Ball pens in a desk drawer. Each pen costs about 95 cents. Each pen lasts me a little over 4 days before its lost and I have to take another from the box. On the other hand, a $42.00 Cross pen will last at least a month.
