Q: Where do I get an adapter to use HP's serial cable with a modem, serial printer, Sun workstation, etc.?
A: The HP Connectivity Pack comes with the serial cable and a set of adapters. HP sells the serial cable and the adapters separately (PC Connectivity Cable, F1015A, price: $24.95; Connector/Adapter Kit, HP F1023A, price: $24.95). The HP serial cable ends in a female DE 9-pin connection, ready to plug directly into the standard male DE 9-pin serial connector found on most desktop PCs. The adapter kit contains four adapters:
- 1. A male DB 9-pin to male DB 25-pin (to connect to a serial printer)
- 2. A male DB 9-pin to male DB 25-pin (to connect to a modem or other devices)
- 3. A male DB 9-pin to female DB 25-pin (to connect to a PC with DB25 serial port)
- 4. A male DB 9-pin to DB 9-pin (to connect to a modem or anything else you'd plug into your desktops DE9 port). Try the serial printer adapter to connect to a Sun workstations DB25 port. Some other
Unix workstations are reported to use Macintosh-style serial ports, and the HP Mac Connectivity Cable (HP F1016A, Price: $24.95) will work with these. Similar adapters should be available at any well equipped computer/electronics store, or you can build your own.
